What We Expect
The Dark Crown is a curated neo-noir burlesque invitational.
We are looking for artists who command the room through story, atmosphere, intention, and transformation—work that feels cinematic, elevated, and unmistakably personal.
This is not a preservation pageant.
This is not a tricks competition.
We crown command.

The Dark Crown Doctrine
Your act should demonstrate:
1) Archetype  A clear character or archetypal presence (witch, widow, siren, empress, outlaw, oracle, villain, saint/sinner, etc.).
We want embodiment—not just a costume.
2) Atmosphere  Music, pacing, and movement should create a world.
We reward tension, restraint, and control over frantic energy.
3) Cohesion Music, styling, costuming, and movement must align.
A “black outfit” is not a concept. A fully realized world is.
4) Transformation This is burlesque. We expect evolution—reveal, shift, escalation, reversal, or emotional turn.
Transformation can be visual, narrative, or energetic.
5) Original Perspective We want your voice. Your mythology. Your point of view.
We do not reward replication, trend-chasing, or familiar tropes.

Tone: What Fits Here
Neo-noir is not a single aesthetic—it’s a cinematic approach to storytelling.
It is defined by intention, atmosphere, and character—not by color palette or darkness alone.
The Dark Crown welcomes a range of textures, including:

• Slow burn seduction
• High-tension storytelling
• Elegant menace
• Dramatic glamour
• Power shifts and transformation
• Narrative twists and dark wit

Performances may be:

• Dark or light
• Serious or playful
• Minimal or stylized

What matters is that the work feels intentional, cohesive, and controlled.
Comedy is welcome when it is character-driven and structured.
Humor should support the narrative—not replace it.
Neo-noir is not about being “spooky.”
It’s about creating a world—and commanding it.

What We Don’t Reward
We are not interested in:

• Shock without structure
• Overused “blood & bondage” tropes
• “Girl-on-girl” as a shortcut to edgy
• Parody for parody’s sake
• Trick volume as a substitute for storytelling
• Trauma monologues (the stage is not therapy)

If your act relies on gimmick instead of concept, it will not score well.

Apparatus & Props
Apparatus is welcome when it serves the story.
Allowed:

• Lollipop 
• Pole
• Chair
• Cane
• Small handheld props

Notes:

• Apparatus should be integrated intentionally.
• Trick volume alone does not influence scoring.
• Acts must remain within time limits and venue safety rules.

Professional Standards
Selected artists agree to:

• Respect time limits
• Provide promo materials by deadline
• Participate in marketing expectations (simple + clear)
• Maintain a professional backstage environment
• Respect judges’ decisions and the rubric

  The Dark Crown is a curated, one-day competition, and performers are selected to create a balanced, intentional show.
  Rather than divisions, we shape the overall experience through a mix of performance textures, including:

• Each act is placed within the show to support pacing, contrast, and flow.
